16th International Cesar Franck Competition in Haarlem, 2022

The 16th International Cesar Franck Competition on the Willibrordus organ in St.-Bavo’s Basilica and Cathedral in Haarlem (The Netherlands) took place from 4 to 8 October 2022. The ten candidates, selected for the first preliminary round, had seven different nationalities. Due to the second centenary of the birth of the composer to whom this competition is devoted, the repertoire for this edition consisted exclusively of works by César Franck.

The jury, consisting of Michel Bouvard (F), Petra Veenswijk (NL) en Étienne Walhain (B),  awarded the first prize to Rik Melissant (The Netherlands), the second prize to Leendert Verduijn (The Netherlands) and the third prize to Hina Ikawa (Japan). Moreover, all prize winners have been invited to give a recital on the Willibrordus organ in the next years.

After the competition, the jury stated that the level of most participants was remarkably high.
